Investment analyses and value propositions
We can examine the potential value of healthcare investments in their implementation context by estimating budget impacts, return on investment, pricing etc.
Often, health economic evaluations need to be put into a wider context of their potential and achievable markets. We can undertake analysis for clients who need to move their product from appraisal to end-user, whether they are private or public sector organisations. Our analyses can include return-on-investment, market impact, risk, competitors, scaling up, pricing and charging policies.
Related Case Studies
Ambulance staff are at relatively high risk of stress-related mental health conditions, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and musculoskeletal conditions. Services to support staff at risk of, or experiencing, these health conditions include assessment and treatment for PTSD, psychosocial support, and physiotherapy. Long waiting times for effective treatment increase the risk of the condition worsening, and hence increases the harm to wellbeing which arises from extended ill-health, and the associated impact on in-work productivity (presenteeism), sickness absence (absenteeism), and staff retention. In addition to the mandated services, the wellbeing hub coordinates, and in some instances, provides these psychosocial support and physiotherapy services to staff to ensure they have access to high-quality and timely support.
The wellbeing hub provides a range of services to promote and improve the well-being of staff, including: Occupational Health (the delivery of which is contracted out) and services provided by the core team such as the Employee Assistance Programme, general advice and support for staff, and policy advice and interpretation. Some of these services are mandated and would need to be provided even without the existence of the hub. Provision of these mandated services appears to require over one-third of the annual budget of hub. Estimates included in our report suggest that the wellbeing hub has achieved efficiency savings of:
- between £130k to £666k per annum attributable to wellbeing and psychological services
- £27k per annum attributable to physiotherapy services
- on average £101k per annum on the efficient management of occupational health services.
Overall, these represent between 26% and 79% of the annual wellbeing hub budget. In other words, if these services were delivered through more traditional solutions, the services would increase the Trust’s costs by between £258k and £794k. Overall, therefore, the economic assessment suggests that the wellbeing hub is an efficient delivery model and is likely to be delivering a positive return on investment for the Trust.
